Citizens Against Radioactive Neighbourhoods(CARN) is a determined group of citizens who see an injustice and governmental contempt in letting BWXT process uranium pellets using beryllium “25 meters” away from a public school. I am discussing this multi-layered issue Peter Harris. If nothing else, it is important to know what is happened at the GE-owned land that BWXT is currerntly leasing on Monaghan Rd. in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. CARN fought this licensing being given to BWXT by CSNC(Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission)that has full jurisdiction over deciding this issue. Any city that gives itself to one industry is asking often for short-term gain/long-term pain. GE gave us employment and now toxic waste. BWXT is currently making uranium pellets for CANDU reactors for the Darlington plant right beside residencies and a public school. The issues and the process is both under- reported and not lucid to the public, which is an example of democracy not in action. We discuss with Peter CARN’s court fightings with BWXT, the dangers of uranium oxide pellets, the fear of it being a site to make enriched fuel(fuel needed for nuclear reactors), the dangers of beryllium and how it is used in the process of making the pellets, the dangers of uranium dust being released into the air, how soil sample testing done by BWXT-while more than what GE did-is a “proxy” to air quality and is a “false standard”, the state of employment for the plant, what Peterborough Public Health is saying and all of this in the context of what we can call GE 2.0.
